This 20 million dollars worth structure which is nearly 2000 feet long was made in collaboration by the funding from Ocean Cleanup which is a nonprofit organization. The company’s goal is to rid the ocean’s water from 150,000 pounds of plastic in its first year of being deployed. The company has plans to clean up at least half of Ocean’s garbage patches by deploying more than dozens of other booms like this.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch consists of huge garbage floating in between California and Hawaii that contains at least 1.8 trillion pieces of scattered garbage out of which 87000 tons is only plastic.

24 years old Boyan Slat; the founder of Ocean cleanup and the inventor behind this amazing new garbage cleaning invention told media about the boom. He said that boom is to be deployed only for testing this month, if everything goes according to plan it will be deployed 1400 miles offshore near the garbage patch.

The boom’s cleanup system works in this manner. After being detached from towing vessels it will swim to form a U shape. After that current of waves and winds will propel it to move forward and trap in the plastic like a Pac Man. This captured plastic will be then sent to land for proper sorting and recycling.

The impenetrable skirt of the boom is only 10 feet long which will allow the marine life to swim under pass it slowly.

Mr. Slat has also shown worry whether it is possible to clean half of the garbage in the coming five years or not. However, Mr. Slat is very optimistic about this new system even if they have not conducted enough testing on it.
