How To Protect The Walls And Covers Cracks In Walls Easily

Our house deteriorates and cracks appear. The reasons why they may appear are very diverse; the passage of time, poor maintenance, inappropriate use, etc. Sometimes it is inevitable that they leave; a bad building resists the stability of the walls, or its own location is the cause of its deterioration; the outer walls, for example, suffer more from knocks and moisture. In the market, there are many products that help us to repair these small fissures like stainless steel corner guards that will protect your wall from crack. Learn the tricks and materials necessary to restore the walls of your home yourself.

Before repairing the cracks we have to take into account the surface on which they have been produced, the depth of the fissure and where the wall is located. Of these factors, the material we use and the treatment we carry out in the repair will depend.

  • Surface: concrete, brick, plaster, wood, stone, cement, porous walls, waterproof, etc.
  • Location: roof, floor, wall, interior or exterior.
  • Cracks: depth and size.

A product for each type of crack:

For small cracks: we will use a cracked filler ready to be applied directly in the slit. Many of the products that are sold dry quickly and this allow you to repair the imperfections that remain after the restoration in a short time. You can also make the dough yourself with white cement and water. Before adhering it, make sure that the mixture has taken shape and has no lumps.

For large cracks: we can apply again a universal putty; in this case, the one we buy will be prepared to cover and fill cracks and holes of more than 10 cm. of depth. They are simpler to apply although their price is more expensive. You will find them of two types: self-adhesive or those that need a mixture of plaster that will serve as a binder.

According to the material: if the wood is the surface that we have to repair, there are special mastics in different shades. If the hole is very large, it is best to replace the piece or use a piece of the same size with which to make a patch

For cement and brick, we will use the original materials, resin repairers and we will even include anti-corrosion products if there is any metallic object in the air. The universal mastic and the bands are the most appropriate for plaster and plaster since most of these mixtures are white.

If we are going to paint or coat after the restoration: it is important to take this aspect into account because of this the materials we use will vary and the cost of the repair will be determined. If the brick it will be exposed, we will only need to make a mud mixture to cover the hole. But if we plan to paint or paper the wall later, we will have to use special repairers and, of course, sand and clean the area very well so that both the paint and the paper adhere perfectly.

How to cover the cracks:

Apply the putty: Once you have all the above factors in mind and choose the product that best suits your problem, gets the tools what you will need for the restoration: spatula and sandpaper. You can use two spatulas; one to contain the putty, like a tray, and another with which to cover the slit; try that its dimensions are greater than those of the hole, that they are clean and dry.

Clean the area where you will work. Leave it free of grease and debris that may hinder the adhesion of the lid cracks. Enlarge the slit and mold it into a ‘v’ shape so that it is easier to insert it into the hole. Introduce with the spatula the dough little by little so that it occupies all the interior, without leaving small air chambers, and press it well so that it takes the body and remains compact. Try not to dry, so remove it while you work and, if necessary, and dampen it a little.

Let it dry. If you had to apply two layers (due to its dimensions or depth), you will have to wait for the first coat to dry well and then add the next one. When everything has dried, we will help with the sandpaper to remove the remains. We will leave the area well-polished and we will try to make the restoration totally unnoticed. If we are careful, it will not cost us much work. In addition, as we said before, it is important that the surface does not present irregularities if we intend to paint or paper it.

Cover crape band: they are very easy to place. Take the measure of the fissure and transfer it to the band. If it is self-adhesive you will only have to remove the cover that protects the glue and cover with it the crack. There are others that come in the form of gauze. The filling to adhere to the wall we will do it ourselves using a little plaster. Otherwise, the procedure is the same.
